About Zoloft
Zoloft is a prescriptive drug and belongs to the group of SSRI`s (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors). The medication is prescribed to increase the level of serotonin in the brain.
Uses or Indications
Zoloft addresses such symptoms of low moods as disinterest in usual activities, insomnia or excessive sleeping, motor movement inadequacies, guilt feeling, loss of concentration, change in appetite, constant fidgeting, fatigue, as well as repeat suicidal thoughts. The drug is also effective for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder and PMDD (premenstrual dysphonic disorder).
How to Use Zoloft
The medication comes in concentrated oral liquid and capsule. Zoloft is advisable to take one time a day, in the morning or in the evening.
Use the dropper which is supplied with the drug package for oral concentrates. Mix Zoloft with 4 ounces of water, ginger ale, lemonade, orange juice, lemon or lime soda and drink it immediately.
The full course of treatment takes several months, so don`t be discouraged if you can`t notice any improvement earlier.
Possible Side Effects
The drug may cause the dry sensation in the mouth that is easily relieved with a chewing gum. Other side effects include loose bowel, diarrhea, dizziness, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, ejaculation difficulty, reduced sex drive and appetite, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, flatulence, vision problems and skin rashes. Among psychological side effects anxiety and agitation should be mentioned.
Drug Precautions
- If you are pregnant or plan to become one, inform your doctor before taking Zoloft.
- Patients with history of liver or kidney disorders, seizures, bleeding problems and heart disease should check with their physician who may reduce the standard dosage.
- When combined with anti-inflammatory drugs, Zoloft may provoke stomach bleeding.
- The medication may start manic episodes.
Drug Interaction
Never take Zoloft if you are under anti depressants or any other MAO inhibitors. Consult with your doctor if you are using such drugs as Rifampin, Theophylline, Nelfinavir, as well as Anticoagulants like Disopyramide, Warfarin, Pimozide and Digoxin.
Missed Dose
Take the missed dose of Zoloft as soon as you remember about it. If several hours have passed, skip the dose. Never attempt to make up by doubling the dose.
Overdose
The most widespread symptoms of overdose are delirium, sleeplessness, vomiting, convulsions, palpitation, agitated behavior, abnormal blood pressure, hallucinations, coma and in some cases even death. If you suspect an overdosage, seek immediate medical help.
Storage
Store Zoloft at room temperature.
