About Tamiflu

Tamiflu (the generic name is oseltamivir phosphate) is available in drug stores upon prescription. It belongs to the group of antiviral medications and is usually prescribed to cure the flu viral infection. Tamiflu prevents the reproduction of infected cells. This drug is sold in capsules and as a liquid.

Uses or Indications

Tamiflu is only effective in treating the flu virus and won`t kill other infections, even if they have similar symptoms as flu.

If taken within the first couple of days of the illness, Tamiflu can show its effect as soon as in a day or even earlier. If the patient has already been ill for two days before she started to take Tamiflu, the drug will stop further development of the influenza symptoms.

How to Use Tamiflu

For better effectiveness the medication should be administered within the first two days after the flu symptoms appear. If the patient already has the flu, Tamiflu should be taken 2 times a day, for not less than 5 days. If you just want to prevent the spread of the infection, administer Tamiflu once a day, for not less than 7 days.

Please note that the liquid Tamiflu suspensions should be shaken before you use them. To avoid stomach upsetting, take the medication with food.

Possible Side Effects

Tamiflu side effects that has been most commonly detected include dizziness, nausea/vomiting, headaches, nosebleed, respiratory problems, stomach disorders and ear infection.

Drug Precautions

  • Avoid taking Tamiflu in case you are allergic to the drug.
  • For patients with kidney disorders, make sure you`ve alerted your doctor before taking Tamiflu. Your optimal dosage may be cut in half in that case.
  • It is unknown if Tamiflu is safe for pregnant women. If you are pregnant or plan to be one, inform your doctor before you start taking Tamiflu.
  • Tamiflu may appear in breast milk and could have a negative impact on a breastfed baby. Avoid administering the drug if you are breastfeeding.
  • Tamiflu hasn`t been tested in patients with diminished immune system and liver disease.

Drug Interaction

In some cases Tamiflu interferes with the flu vaccine. If you used the vaccine within 14 days before or 48 hours after administrating Tamiflu, it is unlikely to be as effective as it can.

Missed Dose

If you occasionally missed a dose of Tamiflu, you should take it asap. In case it`s happened within 2 hours of your scheduled next dose, forget about the missed one and resume your regular dosage schedule.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms of Tamiflu can include nausea and vomiting. As with any medication, if you think an overdose might have occurred, turn to a doctor for medical help immediately.

Storage

Store Tamiflu at room temperature and keep the blister package safe from moisture. Use the liquid drug within 10 days. Do not freeze the drug, but keep it in a fridge.
