About Kenalog

A prescriptive drug for external use, Kenalog, which is known under the generic name of triamcinolone acetonide, comes in liquid suspension and cream. Kenalog belongs to the group of primarily synthetic steroids and is applied as an antipruritic and anti-inflammatory medication.

Uses or Indications

Doctors prescribe Kenalog suspension to treat the inflammation caused by such disorders as bursitis, tendonitis and arthritis.

How to Take Kenalog

Kenalog suspension implies a skin or joint injection.
Take a small amount of Kenalog one time a day, at bedtime. In some cases the drug can be used even 2-3 times a day, but not more than 4 times. The liquid suspension should be shaken before using. Don`t use the suspension if it lost its color, is damaged or cracked.

Side Effects

In case you use Kenalog for a long time there is a possibility of its absorption into the body. This may result in different side effects, especially in infants and children or if the product is taken under false teeth. If you detected any irritation or other side effect which you think may be caused by the product, stop taking the drug and consult with your doctor as soon as possible.

Precautions

  • Do not eat or drink immediately after applying Kenalog.
  • Consult your doctor before taking Kenalog in case you have a history of heart problems, like congestive heart disease, blood clotting problems, hypertension, a recent heart attack, or cataracts, diabetes, osteoporosis, increased eye pressure, mental or mood problems, kidney problems, glaucoma, liver problems (for instance, cirrhosis), a seizure disorder (such as epilepsy), or problems with thyroid.
  • If you are pregnant or planning to be one, consult with your doctor before taking Kenalog.
  • Lab tests showed that Kenalog may appear in breast milk, so consult with your doctor first.
  • Do not use the drug for more than 5 days. If you still have the same symptoms after having applied Kenalog, you should go and check with your doctor.

Drug Interactions

Some drugs are likely to interfere with Kenalog. Consult with your doctor before taking the following medications:
  • Diuretics (furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide, for instance), amphotericin B or digoxin, as the risk of heart problems (such as irregular heartbeat, heart failure and enlarged heart) and low blood potassium may rise.
  • Cyclosporine, as the risk of seizures may increase.
  • Anticoagulants (for example, warfarin), as changes in their effects may take place.
  • Estrogens and hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills), azole antifungals (like ketoconazole and itraconazole), and macrolide antibiotics (clarithromycin, for instance), as they may aggravate Kenalog side effects.
  • Carbamazepine, Barbiturates (for example, phenobarbital), hydantoins (like phenytoin), cholestyramine, or rifampin, as they may diminish Kenalog efficacy.
  • NSAIDs - or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as, ibuprofen), aspirin, or ritodrine, as their side effects can be aggravated by Kenalog.
  • Isoniazid or anticholinesterases (pyridostigmine etc), as their efficacies may be diminished by Kenalog.

Missed Dose

If you miss an application of Kenalog, take the drug as soon as possible.

Overdose

Seek immediate medical assistance if an overdose of Kenalog is suspected.
