About Fosamax
Fosamax is a drug available on prescription and known for pharmacists as Alendronate sodium. Fosamax works by enhancing bone mass and reducing bone loss correspondently.
Uses and Indications
Fosamax is used to treat and/or prevent of osteoporosis in women after menopause. Anyway, men with osteoporosis can also use this drug to increase bone mass, especially if the disease developed as a side effect of steroid therapy. Fosamax is also prescribed to cure Paget`s bone disease.
How to take Fosamax
Fosamax is available in tablets and oral solution.
It is important to note that once a form of medicine is chosen, the patient should stick to it and follow the dosage schedule closely. As Fosamax is better absorbed and thus more effective when taken on an empty stomach, it is best to have your dose in the morning, 30 minutes to one hour before the intake of any kind of food, beverage or other mediation.
Avoid chewing the tablet: it may result in mouth sores. Try not to lie down at least 30 minutes after taking a Fosamax dose.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include abdominal pains, muscle pain, upset stomach or constipation, flatulence, indigestion, and nausea.
In some rare cases it has been reported that Fosamax may lead to jaw arthritis or problems with other joints. In case this side effect occurs, inform your doctor as soon as possible.
Drug Precautions
Fosamax is not recommended for patients with the following medical conditions:
1. Low calcium levels
2. Swallowing disorders or digestive problems, including heartburn and/or ulcers
3. Women under hormone replacement therapy
4. Patients with kidney disorders
It is necessary that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant in the near future prior to taking Fosamax. The drug`s effect on breast milk is also unclear.
It is not recommended that you take Fosamax if you are unable to stand or sit upright for the period of at least 30 minutes or longer.
Drug Interactions
Aspirin combined with over 10 milligrams of Fosamax a day will increase the likelihood of diarrhea.
Do not take any other medication for at least 30 minutes after you`ve had a Fosamax dose.
Missed Dose
Don`t take two or more doses at a time, even if you missed a dose. Get back to your regular schedule of intake the next morning.
For patients who are taking Fosamax once a week, take it the day you remember, and then continue with your schedule on the set day.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include digestive tract disorders such as heartburn, upset stomach, inflammation of the stomach and/or ulcer. If you suspect an overdose, turn to a medical person immediately.
Storage
Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container. Do not freeze the oral solution!
