About Evista

Evista (generic name: raloxifene hydrochloride) is a drug available upon prescription only. Although Evista displays an action similar to the one of estrogen, its effects on the breast and uterus are quite different, therefore it is not cancer-causing.

Uses or Indications

Evista is a medicine prescribed for the cure and/or prevention of osteoporosis, also known as the disease of weak (fragile) bones. It is a known fact that osteoporosis sometimes affects post-menopausal women, though it can also be inherited or even caused by racial factors, habitual smoking and drinking, low-calcium diet, and passive lifestyle.
It should be noted that in spite of Evista`s proven efficacy to increase bone mass within 2 years, it is yet to be tested for longer periods of time.

How to take Evista

Evista should be taken with or without food as prescribed or daily, at any time. In case your regular diet includes a low amount of Vitamin D and/or calcium, take these with food supplements. It is recommended that you avoid taking alcohol and tobacco while you are taking Evista.

Side Effects

One of Evista`s side effects is actually positive and it lies in lowering the patient`s total cholesterol level including "bad" cholesterol. It is important that Evista does not affect either "good" cholesterol (HDL) nor triglyceride levels.
Some other side effects include abdominal problems, muscle and/or chest pains, arthritis, bronchitis, upset stomach and nausea, headache, dizziness, fever, throat problems, sinusitis, gynecological problems, urinary tract infection, uterine discharge, insomnia, bone joint pain, leg cramps, skin rashes, sweating, allergic reactions, and weight gain.

Consult with your doctor if you notice any of these side effects appear.

Drug Precautions

  • Evista is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women as it can harm the developing baby.
  • Evista increases the risk of clots, so it is not recommended for patients with past history of thrombosis and other blood clot problems.
  • Because of Evista`s known effects on the formation of blood clots (see above), it should be avoided during prolonged bed rests. For patients who are expecting a scheduled surgery, it is necessary that the doctor is alerted about Evista intake.
  • Use Evista cautiously if you suffer from any of the following conditions: cancer, congestive heart condition; liver condition, etc.
  • In case abnormal uterine bleeding develops while you are under Evista, contact your doctor for a consultation right away.

Drug Interactions

A consultation is needed before combining Evista with the following drugs: Colestyramine, Clofibrate, Diazepam Diazoxide, Ibuprofen, Indomethacin, Naproxen, and Warfarin.

Missed Dose

Skip the one you missed and resume your regular dosage schedule. Never take a double dose of Evista to repair the missed dose.

Overdose

There have been no reports of overdosing Evista. But as in any medication, excess intake can lead to problems. If overdose is suspected, contact your doctor for a consultation as soon as possible.

Storage

Evista should be stored at room temperature.
