About Elidel
Elidel, which is also known under the generic name of Pimecrolimus, a non-steroidal brand of cream, is meant for external use. Elidel represents a good alternative for patients who can`t tolerate conventional eczema therapies.
Uses or Indications
The medication is prescribed to relieve the painful eczema symptoms and can be used by children not less than 2 years old and adults. Elidel is good both for long-term and short courses of treatment.
As Elidel makes the skin more susceptible to ultraviolet light, the patient should give up sunbathing while using the medication.
How to take Elidel
A thin layer of the medication is applied to the affected area and rubbed in two times a day. Bandaging isn`t recommended, unless it is prescribed by the doctor. The drug is meant for topical use only, so it should be kept away from mouth and eyes.
Side Effects
Side effects include allergic reactions, respiratory problems (for example, bronchitis, inflammation of the tonsils, throat and nasal passage), burning or warmth at the application site, abdominal problems, like intestinal and stomach inflammation, constipation and diarrhea, nausea, headache, painful menstruation, fever, herpes infection, flu and vomiting.
If any of the above symptoms develop to any degree of intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible.
Drug Precautions
- Elidel is undesirable for patients with poor immune systems or Netherton`s syndrome.
- Elidel may result in skin reactions like mild or moderate sensation of burning.
- Eczema and treatment using Elidel can make your skin vulnerable to such infections as chickenpox, shingles and herpes.
- If you are pregnant or plan to be one, notify your doctor before taking Elidel.
- The influence of Elidel on breast milk is unknown. As the drug can potentially have a negative effect on an infant, consult your doctor first.
