About Denavir
Denavir belongs to the antiviral group of medications; it is an effective drug against recurring cold sores (or herpes labialis) on the surface of the lips and the face of adult patients.
Uses or Indications
Denavir is primarily used as an antiviral treatment for persistent or recurring cold sores on the lips or on the face.
How to Use Denavir
Denavir topical is a prescription which is commonly available in 1% cream formulation. Application of the drug must be done under careful observation of the instructions of a physician. The application should be made on areas of cold sore lesions; once every two hours, while the user is awake, and for a duration of four days, unless otherwise prescribed by a physician. Treatment should ideally commence as soon as the symptoms of a cold sore present themselves.
Possible Side Effects
Although severe adverse effects as a result of using Denavir are not presently reported, other more common effects are more likely to be experienced. If the following symptoms appear, maintain the applications and consult with a doctor: irritation on the area of application, headaches, rash outbreaks, a localized numbness or tingling sensations on the areas of application of the cream, and changes in taste sensations. If adverse effects other than those mentioned appear, consult a doctor immediately.
Drug Precautions
Denavir is a medication which is intended for external use only. Treatment should be confined only on the areas of the lips and the face. Do not make applications of the drug on the mucous membranes within the nose, the mouth, and the genital or rectal area. The drug may cause an irritation, and lead to the possibility of an infection. Women who are conceiving, those who are planning on pregnancy, and those who are breastfeeding are advised to consult with a doctor before using Denavir. It is not known whether the drug has an effect on an unborn baby, or if it is passed on through breast milk; initial consultations are necessary as a precautionary measure.
Drug Interaction
Avoid using other topical preparations or medications on the area which is being treated with Denavir, unless such use is under the prescription of a physician. Consult a doctor beforehand, prior to using skin products, cosmetics, and astringents during treatment. Such products may have an effect on the potency of Denavir. At present, there are no other medications which have any reported interactions with Denavir.
Missed Dose
Since a missed dose will unlikely have any serious effect on the treatment, fulfill the missed application as soon as it is remembered. If the next application is due near, then the missed dose should be skipped, and the next one taken, according to the regular intake schedule.
Overdose
Excessive applications of Denavir are found to be of minimal adverse consequence to health. If ever an excessive amount of the medication has been used in application, or if the drug has been orally ingested, the user is advised to immediately contact a hospital emergency room or a local poison management center for advice.
Storage
Store Denavir within room temperatures of 20°-25°C, away from extreme heat and moisture.
