About Aldara

Aldara is a medication which serves as an immune reaction modifier. Some of its uses include treatment for actinic keratosis, and minor forms of skin cancer which do not require surgery as a treatment option.

Uses or Indications

Aldara is more commonly used as treatment for external genital or perianal warts, by helping the body fight off the virus, and not just dealing with the symptom (warts). This results in an efficient treatment of warts on the genital and anal area.

How to Use Aldara

For treatment of genital warts, use Aldara three times a week, on alternating days. The medication comes in the form of a cream which is applied on the treatment area, and rubbed on it until the cream`s color disappears. The affected part should not be covered with plastic and nylon fabrics; cotton gauze and underwear may do. Make the application before bedtime and should be left on the skin for six to ten hours, then wash the area with water and soap. The foreskin of the penis must be pulled back and washed before application; avoid applying the medication on inner vaginal tissue to prevent an irritation.

Possible Side Effects

The usual adverse effects which manifest on the affected or treated area include changes in skin tone, redness, burning, the presence of a sore, ulcer, or a blister, tough skin, swelling, itching, peeling of the skin, and scabbing or crusting. If such symptoms are present after use, consult with a doctor.

Drug Precautions

If flu-like symptoms are experienced after use of Aldara, consult with a physician. The user may need to lower the frequency of use, or should stop any applications temporarily, until the skin is not irritated with the drug, or until the flu-like symptoms dissipate. Users should refrain from having oral, anal, and genital sex as long as the medication is applied on the skin; otherwise, the area should be washed thoroughly before sexual contact. Avoid using other skin products on the area of treatment, unless it is prescribed by a physician. Aldara is intended for external use only; avoid applications on the inside of genital orifices in order to avoid the possibility of an irritation and infection.

Drug Interaction

There exists a possibility that other medications may interact or have an effect on the potency of Aldara; potential users should inform their physician of any prescription or over-the-counter medications which they are currently taking, including medicines prescribed by other physicians, dietary supplements, and herbal products. Of particular concern are all other topical applications on the same general area of treatment.

Missed Dose

Missed applications of the medication may be applied upon remembering; after such, the regular medication schedule should be followed accordingly.

Overdose

Excessive applications of the medication on the body can lead to an increased occurrence of acute and localized skin reactions, and may also cause an increased chance for systemic reactions. If an overdose is suspected, or if the medication is ingested, seek immediate medical help.

Storage

Store Aldara in temperatures below 25°, but well above the freezing point. Keep and dispense in a tightly-sealed container, away from direct heat and sunlight.
